Organization Overview
Oregon Nikkei Endowment (ONE) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989. ONE has recently reorganized to better coordinate the work of its two flagship programs, the Japanese American Historical Plaza and the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center.
The Japanese American Historical Plaza is an award-winning jewel on Portland’s waterfront: the first memorial in the nation dedicated to the relationship of the Bill of Rights to Japanese American internment during WW II.
Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center is a history center (museum) with exhibition, archival collections and educational programs in a handsomely renovated historic building in Portland’s Old Town, close to the Japanese American Historical Plaza, in the heart of a revitalized heritage district. Work is in the offices of the Legacy Center, where the vast majority of program activities are ongoing.
Position Overview
We are seeking a self-motivated, energetic Executive Director to lead the organization at an exciting time in its development. We are looking for someone to build on the strong base of community support, volunteer effort and first-rate facilities to create new and exciting programs that capture untold stories and deepen the understanding of civil rights issues. An expanded and enthusiastic board seeks leadership in fundraising, outreach and program development to enrich the community dialog about the relevance of history, ethnic identity and civil rights in today’s society.
The ideal candidate for the Executive Director position will have:
- at least five years of experience with progressive roles in supervisory and management responsibilities in nonprofit organizations.
- Masters degree or equivalent experience in executive responsibilities, business management, organizational development, fundraising and strategic planning.
- Ability to build strong relationships within the organization, among related organizations, with the Nikkei community and with the broader public.
- An ability and enthusiasm for communicating with the public about our ideas and our mission
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implement long range and short-term fundraising strategies, including grant writing, the establishment of a major donor campaign and an endowment fund to ensure stable financial support for general operations.
- Promote ONE as the region’s primary resource center for information on Japanese American history, and ensure outstanding community service to inquiring individuals and organizations.
- Lead the development of exhibit planning, education programs, archival collection, and preservation of the Plaza.
- Develop the use of new media to strengthen access to programs and engage broader audiences.
- Establish and maintain fiscal management and operations systems.
- Provide staff support for committees. Oversee recruitment, training, and supervision of volunteers.
