Angel Island Book Talk

Wednesday, September 1, 7:30pm
Powell's Books, 1005 W Burnside, Portland

From 1910 to 1940, the Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco served as the processing and detention center for over one million people from around the world. Based on extensive new research and oral histories, Judy Yung's Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America examines the great diversity of people that traveled through Angel Island, offering a more complete and complicated history of immigration to America than we have ever known. Drawing on rich immigration histories and stunning photographs, Ms. Yung will bring to life the stories of diverse Angel Island immigrants: Chinese "paper sons," Japanese "picture brides," Korean students, South Asian political activists, Russian and Jewish refugees, Mexican families, Filipino workers and repatriates among many others. This fascinating history of Angel Island offers new insight into America's complicated relationship to immigration, a story that continues today.

For more information about the book and the authors, please visit www.aiisf.org/index.php/book.

Upcoming Lecture

Farming the Waters: Japanese Oyster Growers in Willapa Harbor, Washington

Tuesday, September 7, noon at Washington State University Vancouver, MC 22
Wednesday, September 8, 7pm at Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum, Ilwaco

The Center for Columbia River History's 2009 James B. Castles Fellow, Katy Fry, will explore the history of the oyster industry in Washington, in two presentations. This talk illuminates the lives of Japanese American oysterers, how they interacted with the surrounding community, and their fate upon America's entrance into World War II.

Washington's oyster industry has never received the same iconic status as other natural resource industries. Consequently, the story of an important group of oyster laborers also goes unnoticed. When Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, six of the eight most important oyster packing houses almost exclusively employed Japanese and Japanese Americans. Almost half of the oysters opened in Willapa Harbor in the southeast corner of the state occurred in Japanese American owned businesses. These companies played an instrumental role in creating and sustaining the oyster industry in Willapa Harbor, with important cultural and economic reverberations in the greater Columbia River Basin.
This program will be presented at Washington State University Vancouver on September 7 at 12:00 p.m. in MC 22 and at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum on September 8 at 7:00 p.m.
