Donation to Oregon Nikkei Endowment

During World War II, the United States government decreed that 120,000 Japanese Americans (two-thirds of whom were American-born) were to be forcibly removed from their homes solely because of their ethnicity. As a result of this loss of civil rights, many lost their family treasures, photographs and livelihoods.

Your support will help to ensure that the history, art and culture of Japanese Americans are preserved and shared with the community for generations to come.

Oregon Nikkei Endowment programs:

Japanese American Historical Plaza, founded in 1990 and located in Portland's Tom McCall Waterfront Park, was built to remember the World War II internment of Japanese Americans and as a symbol of how fragile our civil liberties can be.

Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center is a Japanese American history museum that houses a permanent exhibit, rotating temporary exhibit, research library and archive of the history of the Japanese in Oregon. The Legacy Center is located in the historic Old Town neighborhood of Portland, formerly Portland's Japantown.

Our speakers' bureau serves school classrooms, community organizations, service clubs and other groups, as well as providing guided tours of Legacy Center exhibits and the Historical Plaza. The Japanese American experience is a story that is not told in many history books, adding to the importance of our speakers' bureau.

Museum in a Suitcase is a portable exhibit for classroom presentations by our trained speakers, who share the Japanese American experience in Oregon with students by bringing images, artifacts and other teaching resources.

Mission Statement

Oregon Nikkei Endowment:
The mission of the Oregon Nikkei Endowment is to preserve and honor the history and culture of Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest, to educate the public about the Japanese American experience during World War II, and to advocate for the protection of civil rights for all Americans.

Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center:
The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center serves as a focal point for the preservation and sharing of the history and culture of the Japanese American community. One of the most important chapters in the Japanese American experience is the forced internment of over 110,000 persons of Japanese descent during the Second World War. This fuels our commitment to the preservation of civil rights for all Americans. The Center will be a venue for cultural and research activities and an invaluable resource for the exploration of the experiences of Japanese Americans and their role in Oregon's multi-cultural community.
